Who We Are

A cultural space and concept store in the heart of Macclesfield.

Proper Sound is a laid-back, sociable place where people come together over good music, art and conversation.

Inspired by the vibrant legacy of the Haçienda, the enduring influence of Macclesfield’s own Ian Curtis and the spirit of the Northwest, we bring music, independent retail, creativity and community together under one roof.

It is a relaxed place to discover original artwork and independent apparel, meet friends, hear carefully chosen music and feel connected to Macclesfield’s creative community.

We host regular events spanning indie, house, old skool, Northern Soul and more, while supporting local artists and independent creatives through the work displayed and sold throughout the space.

Meet Lucie

Proper Sound is proudly family-run and led by Lucie, a local independent business owner whose love of music has shaped the whole project.

Born in Stockport and influenced by the 1990s club scene, Lucie was a regular at Shelley’s and part of the wider Manchester music culture that continues to inspire Proper Sound today.

After spending ten years living near Glastonbury and returning to the festival year after year, she brought that same sense of music, connection and community to Macclesfield.

You will often see Lucie’s daughters working alongside her too, making Proper Sound a genuinely family-run space.

Proper Sound is a relaxed, welcoming place to catch up with friends, meet like-minded people or simply spend time surrounded by music and creativity.

We believe good music, good conversation and a friendly atmosphere can turn an ordinary visit into something memorable.

Art & Apparel

Our concept store brings together music-inspired clothing, original artwork, prints and gifts influenced by Manchester, Macclesfield and the culture of the Northwest.

We are proud to support local and independent artists, makers and creatives by giving their work a place to be seen, shared and sold.

Music & Events

Music is woven through Proper Sound. Alongside our independent shop, artwork and creative projects, we host DJs, workshops and carefully programmed events spanning indie, house, old skool, Northern Soul and more.
