Welcome to Proper Sound – a space inspired by the vibrant legacy of the Hacienda and the enduring influence of Macclesfield’s own Ian Curtis. We’re more than just a venue; we’re a cultural hub where music, community, and creativity come together.
By day, we serve specialty coffee and delicious toasties, offering a space to sit quietly, work, or connect with like-minded people. By night, we transform into a laid-back bar with draft beer, cocktails, and a carefully curated soundtrack. Whether you’re here to unwind or catch up with friends, Proper Sound is the perfect place.
We also host regular DJ events, covering a broad range of music tastes – from classic indie to house and everything in between. Our Old Skool nights pay tribute to the 90s rave scene, a passion rooted in my own experience from that era. We also celebrate Northern Soul, with dedicated nights that bring together a crowd who love the energy, rhythm, and history of the genre.

At Proper Sound, we proudly honor the region’s deep-rooted musical history, with a special homage to Macclesfield’s own Ian Curtis, the legendary frontman of Joy Division. Our courtyard features the town’s original mural of Curtis, a testament to his enduring influence on local culture.

MEET LUCIE
Proper Sound is a proudly family-run space led by Lucie, a local independent business owner…
…born in Stockport and shaped by the music scene of the ’90s. Back in the day, she was a regular at Shelley’s and part of the legendary Manchester club scene, where the music, the people, and the energy left a lasting mark.
A lifelong lover of live music and an avid Glastonbury fan, Lucie spent ten years living near the festival, soaking up its spirit year after year.
Now based in Macclesfield, she’s poured that same passion into Proper Sound - a space built on connection, creativity, and community. You’ll often see her daughters working alongside her too, sharing the same love of music, art, and all things Glasto.
For Lucie, music isn’t just something you listen to, it’s something you feel. It’s good for the soul.
